Inflation: The Labour Market
Author(s)
David Metcalf David Metcalf (London School of Economics and Princeton University)
Abstract
This essay examines four aspects of the labor market and inflation. First, the role of unions in the inflationary process is considered. Second, studies which analyze inflation by breaking the labor market down into its constituent parts, such as regional or local labor markets, are discussed. Third, the functioning of the labor market is examined to give some insight into how unemployment can be reduced for a given level of excess demand. Finally, pay policy and indexation are evaluated.
